Colonel Robert Gould Shaw fought for the Union during the American Civil War. He is best known for commanding the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first African American units raised in the North. Shaw's leadership and sacrifice were pivotal in demonstrating the bravery and capability of Black soldiers in the Union Army. He was killed at the Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863.
