How did the Europeans discover the Aztecs?

The Aztec empire was centered in what is now Mexico. The early Spanish explorers came upon it by accident in the early part of the 16th century. The Aztecs had built a large and impressive Native American civilization. Eventually, the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortes' destroyed its power and Spain acquired a new large territory in the New World.
