How many spikes per cross tie?

There is no fixed number of spikes per cross tie, it depends on the policy of the individual railroad. Most of the time you will probably see two spikes per tie plate, even though the tie plate may have 4 spike positions. In areas with high speed curves you may see all four holes used to better hold the rail in place.
