Why did Jacques Cartier explore?

France became interested in the New World at about the same time England did. France sent Jacques Cartier to search and declare territory for France.

Through the explorations of Jacques Cartier, during the period of 1534 - 1543, France established a claim to the northern part of the continent, from New England to the Gulf of the St. Lawrence.
