Why is the workweek Monday through Friday?

The idea that people could take two days off work per week is largely the result of the organized labor movement. As for the choice of Saturday and Sunday, that is influenced by religion. Saturday is the official day of rest for Judaism and for the Seventh Day Adventists, while Sunday is the official day of rest for Christianity.
