The typography was different. New England lent itself to small family-owned farms because or the rocky, hilly terrain that could be worked by one family in a subsistence farming manner. The Southeast lent itself to much larger parcels of land that required a number of laborers to plant, cultivate, and harvest; especially the cash crops such as indigo, rice, sugar cane, tobacco, and cotton over its longer growing season.
