The GOP Presidential candidates for 2012 were Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Gary E. Johnson, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum. After a very contentious process, Mitt Romney earned enough votes to get the nomination, which officially occurred at the Republican convention later that summer. Although Ron Paul was nominally still in the race, he mathematically could not get the nomination, so it was Mitt Romney who faced President Obama. On November 6, 2012, the election was held, and President Obama defeated Mitt Romney to win a second term in office.
