What was the impact of the treaty of tordasillas?

The Treaty of Tordesillas divided newly discovered lands outside Europe between Spain and Portugal along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands. This helped prevent conflicts between the two nations over their expanding colonial interests by establishing spheres of influence. Portugal gained control over Brazil while Spain acquired most of the Americas.
