Why did Henry VIII sign letters hr?

The "R" stood for "Rex," which is latin for King. Latin was the common language of the highly educated back then. So, by signing "Henry R" he was signing as "Henry the King." His daughter Elizabeth did the same, but the R stood for "Regina," or Queen in her case.
