Prince Rupert, BC, like the rest of Canada, transitioned away from gold coins as part of its currency with the adoption of the decimal system in 1871. Although gold coins were in circulation prior to this change, they were phased out as the Canadian government moved to paper currency and coins made of less valuable metals. By the early 20th century, gold coins were no longer commonly used in everyday transactions.
