How is the sahel both a physical and cultural boundary?

The Sahara desert is indeed both a physical and cultural barrier across the African Continent. Physically, its expanse divides North from Southern Africa. Culturally it marks the division of an Arab and Islamic majority of Northern Africa from the religious and ethnic diversity of the South.
