No it is not. Sub is a prefix, referring to something. Sub means below, thus submarine is below water. Subzero is below zero. Etc.

Grammatically it is not a Word of its own right, though it is used as slang for submarine, both in the actual sense and when referring to the yummy Sandwiches I make at my work.
