What is lochia?

Lochia is the vaginal discharge that occurs after childbirth, consisting of blood, mucus, and uterine tissue. It typically progresses through three stages: lochia rubra (bright red) in the first few days postpartum, lochia serosa (pinkish-brown) around one to two weeks, and lochia alba (yellowish-white) that can last several weeks. This discharge is a natural part of the healing process as the body expels the remnants of pregnancy. Monitoring lochia is important for assessing maternal health and recovery.
