A legend says there was a man called Valentine during the reign of Claudius in Rome. At that time there were laws that Roman soldiers could not get married, and he went against these laws by performing marriage ceremonies for soldiers. Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against command of Emperor Claudius the second. There are legends surrounding Valentine's actions while in prison. In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally decapitation because of his stand for Catholic marriage. Supposedly, the last Words he wrote were in a note to a soldier's daughter. He signed it, "from your Valentine."

Valentine's Day was named after Saint Valentine. It has become a way for people around the world to express their love for each other.
