Why do dogs lie on their owners?

It's a simple 'throw-back' to the dog's ancestors. Dogs were (and are) pack animals. Even though they're now domesticated, they still see humans as the pack leader. In the wild, dogs would regularly lay together for 'companionship', safety and warmth.
