Why do planes have flashing lights on them?

It is to help them at night when they land

Actually those strobe light are to make all aircraft more visible at all times, especially to other aircraft flying near them. They do nothing at all to help landing as the pilot can not see these strobe lights. Every larger aircraft has very bright retractable lights specifically to land with.
