What does it mean when you have a skull surrounded by roses in a headstone?

There are a number of interpretations, however, if the headstone is relatively new (since 1962) the deceased may have been a "Deadhead" a follower of the band The Grateful Dead, as that is one of their symbols. The origin of the image comes from a black and white illustration in a book of poems from 1913.
