What is the origin of the word negligee?

The Word negligee is deduced from the french Word n̩glig̩. Literally it means 'neglected'. It's a form of sheer usually long nightgown for women. When first introduced in France in the 18th century it was meant to mimic the heavy head-to-toe daytime dresses for women.
