Say for example, you are currently at point A on the surface of the earth. As the earth rotates, point A will eventually be on the side of the earth facing away from the sun, resulting in darkness. It always spins in the same direction, hence the sun always rises in the East and sets in the West. The reason we have moonlight is because light is reflected off of the moon.
