How did Charles Lindbergh earn his nickname?

The nickname Lone Eagle derived from his solo transatlantic flight. the not so honorary (Von Lindemann) may have been his real name- and alluded to his involvement with the German Bund. I think Von Lindemann has a neat, Teutonic ring!
