How long did it take to turn plants and animals into fossil fuels?

Just like anything else that's natural it takes a very long time to turn plants and oganisms into fossil fuel. Eventually with our technology though we will be able to convert them quite easily. It is created from the pressure of the soil and rock sediment on top of the organic material.
