The two survivors of the Mount Pelée eruption in 1902 were Ludger Sylbaris and a man named Auguste Cyparis. Sylbaris was found in a small shelter, while Cyparis survived in a prison cell. Their remarkable survival amidst the catastrophic eruption, which devastated the town of Saint-Pierre, has made their stories notable in the history of the disaster.
