Why was big ben called the elizabeth tower?

Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. The tower was officially renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The name change honors the queen's long reign and her significance in British history.
