The last significant position in John Tyler's political career was his role as a member of the Confederate States Congress. After serving as the 10th President of the United States from 1841 to 1845, Tyler became increasingly aligned with Southern interests and eventually joined the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was elected to the Confederate House of Representatives in 1861 but died before he could take his seat in 1862.
