Why do swifts come back to Britain later than swallows?

Swifts and swallows both migrate to sub-saharan Africa. However, swallows return earlier because the small, flying insects they eat are abundant during earlier spring. Swifts return later because they follow seasonal rains up towards their breeding grounds. However, the migration times of both birds will vary due to weather and food variability.
