Professional theives are able to get in and out of a home in 3-5 minutes so they aren't likely to be deterred by a burglar alarm but when choosing a home, it does lessen the appeal to them. People with alarms may be more lax in other areas of security beacuse they feel they can so you may want to speak to a local police officer or someone from the alarm company for reccomendations of additional measures you can take. Another benefit of those alarms is they can hardwire your smoke detector and automatically dispatch the fire department if your smoke alarm goes off. For such a low cost, they are worth it.
