Why did Cleopatra's father go into hiding?

Cleopatra's father, Ptolemy XII, never went into hiding. He went into exile, but was very visible in trying to get financial backing so he could raise an army to try and get his kingdom back. Much later, it was Cleopatra herself who had to go into hiding.
