Meriwether Lewis was selected to lead the expedition due to his strong leadership skills, extensive knowledge of the western territories, and experience as a soldier and frontiersman. Thomas Jefferson, who commissioned the expedition, trusted Lewis to explore and map the newly acquired lands of the Louisiana Purchase, as well as to establish relations with Native American tribes. Lewis's background in natural science also made him an ideal candidate to document the flora, fauna, and geography of the region.
