What are the steps taken by the Indian government to conserve water?

The Indian government has taken up a twin-track method to conserve water. Large emphasis is placed on the water companies assessing how to reduce the consumption of water in both residential areas and commercial ones. It has declared the year 2013 as the "year of conserving water."
