Cypress tree symbolism was associated with the god of the underworld, Hades, during ancient times. Because the trees are extremely long-lived, they continued to be seen around graveyards for a very long time and, therefore, people kept planting them and continued the tradition.

This tradition generally seems to be strongest in Mediterranean countries that historically traded with the ancient Greeks.
