Why does Matt's father leave him alone in the wilderness in the sign of the beaver?

Matts father left to get Matts mom and sisters, but he did not want strangers to invade the land they own. So he left Matt. In next chapters Ben steals his rifle and a swarm of bees attack, Matt is saved by indians.
