Because he had invented what he considered one of the most dangerous weapons of war of his age (comparable to single handedly inventing and building nuclear weapons): dynamite! Yes he had not invented it to be a weapon, he had invented it to make nitroglycerine safe in mining and construction, but it became a weapon.
