It could be a calcium deposit. What have your pH and alkalinity readings been. If 7.8 or higher that may be your answer. Correct the pH and try maintaining a slightly more aggressive pH - 7.2 to 7.4 for a while.
It could be that you are too aggressive on the pH - 6.8 to 7.2 adjust this and maintain 7.5. You will not get rid of the "fading" if this is the cause. k
