How was slavery in Massachusetts different from slavery in the southern?

Massachusetts, one of the cradles of Liberty, was in the North, and at the time of the Civil War- in fact long before it- did not have Slavery.

EDIT: CORRECTION...THIS STATE WAS THE FIRST STATE TO HAVE SLAVES AND HAD SLAVERY FOR ABOUT 170 YEARS. WITH INDUSTRIALIZATION AND AN INFLUX OF NEW IMMIGRANTS, THE NOTIONS OF THE PEOPLE CHANGED AND BY 1800 SLAVERY WAS ILLEGAL. There was very little differncce in the work that slaves had to do. In all slave states the slaves were used to do agricultural work, house work, and the various trades.
