Henry VIII broke with Papal authority in order to be able to divorce Catherine of Aragon the widow of his brother. Cardinal Wolsey had been unable to persuade the Pope to grant Henry a divorce. He proclaimed himself head of the Church of England, dissolved the monastries and divorced Catherine, all in 1532.

Henry needed money as he had been bankrupt by spending so much in wars so when he was head o fchurch he sold off the monastries and their land to ricg people and took all the gold and silver ornaments for himself. this brought him money.
