How did Athena the Greek goddess become a goddess?

Her father Zeus swallowed her mother before she was born after hearing a prophecy that one of his children would overcome him and years later he felt a pain in his head and had Hephaestus chop his head open to see what was wrong and out popped Athena in full battle armor already grown.
