It has been hypothesized that the nicotine, which acts as both a relaxant to some nerves and a stimulant to others, can be the cause of the hiccups. It has also been hypothesized that the carbon dioxide inhaled while smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the lungs, causing the body to instinctively inhale rapid amounts of oxygen, resulting in the hiccup. It has been a complaint of many smokers on my different internet forums; far too many to be considered a coincidence.
