In the short story, The Purple Dress, by O. Henry, there are two young ladies who quarrel against the color of their dresses whom they will be trying to catch the eye of their new boss, Mr. Ramsay. The main protagonist of the story is Maida, who favors in the color purple for her dress, but her friend Grace fancies the color red, believing it to be Mr. Ramsay's favorite color. Grace, seeing the competition, scolds and mocks Maida's choice in color believe that the color purple is such an odd color, but Maida's mind still stands with the color purple. The two go to their apartments to get ready, but Grace is held up by the landlady of the apartment telling her that if she does not pay her rent, she will have to leave. Maida gives Grace the money to pay her rent, but unfortunately, that money was supposed to buy her her dress. Grace goes on to the party without Maida, while she sulks onto the dress shop to tell the owner that she will not be able to pay for the dress. But the dress shop owner gives her the dress anyway saying that she will be able to find a way to pay for the dress in due time. Maida wears her beautiful, purple dress on her way to the party, but she is walking though a storm, but she still beams and mentions that as long as she has her dress, she is happy. But on her way to the party, she is stopped by a dark figure, to which it is her surprise to know that it is Mr. Ramsay, to escort her to her way back home. She says yes and sneezes in the end.
