What causes a blood moon to appear red?

Well, darling, when the lovely Earth stands between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on our lunar friend, the only rays that manage to reach the moon are those sneaky red ones. So, the poor moon ends up looking like it's been slapped with a rouge brush. How scandalous!
