The transcontinental railroad cut the travel time from east to west down from multiple months by boat to 8-11 days by train. This made it possible for settlers to get to their plots of land in the west much quicker. Cattle drives took origin when cattle ranchers decided to sell there cattle to folks in the east. If you wanted to sell cattle in the west you would make far less money than if you sold in the east. So the ranchers would drive the cattle to the train and ship them off to the east. Hunters where hired by railroad companies to kill all the buffalo so that they didnt interfere with the train. this caused the native Americans way of life to die off.
