Why did Patrick Henry kill himself?

It is doubtful that this is how he died. Modern scholars believe Patrick Henry died of stomach cancer, at age 63; it was known even in his day that he had been in poor health for a long while. But the story of his wife Sarah's death is less clear. She suffered from what today would be called severe depression and mental illness, and it is she who may have committed suicide, according to some sources.
