In the book Tangerine why does Erik acts the way he is?

I think that the real reason that Erik acts the way he does is because of his parents. His parents didnt do anything when he spray painted Paul's eyes, so he turned into a syco! He is (in my opinion) mentally ill! He is just a sick person!
