Was it rats or snakes that Saint Patrick got rid of?

Legend says that Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland but scientists have found no fossil evidence that snakes ever lived there. The snakes are thought to be an allegory representing the pagan gods that Patrick drove from the country by converting the people to Christianity.
