The United States Secret Service was originally established in 1865 as a part of the Department of the Treasury to combat counterfeiting of currency. In 2003, the agency was transferred to the Department of Homeland Security, but it continues to carry out its original mission alongside its role in protecting the President and other high-profile individuals. Thus, while the Secret Service itself did not form a new agency, its functions evolved significantly within the federal structure.
