Is there a Transponder immobilizer citroen xsara Picasso problem?

we have had problems starting our car which turned out to be a transponder fault but it flashed up engine immobilizer on the dash. the part cost about £6 but it cost £90 to have the problem diagnosed on the computer at the Citroen garage!
