Actually, Patrick was not Irish, he was a Roman from Great Britain (original name Maewyn Succat) who was kidnapped by pirates at age 16 and taken to Ireland where he was forced to work as a slave, Six years later he escaped and returned to Britain, eventually going to the European mainland and becoming a priest. Pope Celestine made him a bishop and, because of his prior experience in Ireland, sent him back to that country as a missionary. He is much loved because he was the person largely responsible for converting Ireland from paganism to Christianity. he was a very charismatic person.
