Why does Lawrence Taylor wear spider 43 on his jersey?

The Spider #43 patch was put on the jerseys to commemorate fellow player Carl "Spider" Lockhart. He was a CB who played his entire NFL career with the Giants. After he died at age 43 of lymph cancer, the Giants honored him with this patch.
