Why were Perseus and Danae put into a chest and set adrift?

Perseus and his mother, Danae, were put into a chest and set adrift by King Acrisius of Argos. Acrisius, having received a prophecy that he would be killed by his grandson, sought to prevent this fate by locking Danae away. However, Zeus intervened, impregnating Danae, which led Acrisius to fear for his own life and ultimately decide to cast them both into the sea to avoid the threat of the prophecy.
