What was the Khedive of Egypt?

The Khedive of Egypt was a title used by the viceroys who governed Egypt and Sudan on behalf of the Ottoman Empire from 1867 until the British occupation in 1882. The position was established by the Ottoman Sultan, granting the Khedive significant autonomy while still being nominally under Ottoman control. The most notable Khedive was Ismail Pasha, who oversaw modernization efforts and significant infrastructure projects. The title was abolished in 1914, following the formal declaration of a British protectorate over Egypt.
