Does the middle compartment on 2003 BMW 530i open or just slide back and forth?

I own a 2001 530i and I pondered over this for quite some time, gently trying to open the console. Unfortunately, it does not open for storage - rather, it only slides forward and aft. I read through the entire owners manual, and found nothing regarding the center console - other than the mini storage compartment in front of the console. It was after I spoke with the BMW dealer that I found out it is only an adjustable arm rest, although I have not found driving in that position very comfortable. Hope this helps and enjoy your 530i!
